To confidence is owed half the success of becoming an intellectual; and to intellect is owed less than half.

Intellect will have to occupy a good deal less than half if there is to be room enough for dishonesty.

Indeed. Now I always thought that confidence was important for the exercise of intellectual activity at all, but I found that it's only valid as part of prudence.
